We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Councillor Mus Tary on Monday morning.
Since his election to Reigate and Banstead Borough Council in 2021, Mus worked selflessly for residents in Hooley, Merstham and Netherne. He placed the needs of his community at the heart of everything he did, offering support, guidance and practical help wherever it was needed.
Mus began his political journey in Croydon, working on the 2010 General Election campaign before standing for local election for the first time in 2014. As always, he made lifelong friends and contributed hugely to his local party. After moving to Merstham, he immediately joined our Association and became an enthusiastic and valued activist.
Mus embodied respect, dignity and integrity in every aspect of his public service. Always ready to step forward, he joined the Reigate and Banstead Council Executive in 2024 as Portfolio Holder for Housing and Support, where he championed schemes to help residents access affordable housing.
He was a calm, principled and inspirational figure, particularly when challenges arose. His commitment to doing the right thing never faltered. Within the council, he was known as a thoughtful, conscientious and dedicated member who carried a profound sense of duty to the residents he served.
Those who knew Mus personally will also remember the love and joy he shared with his wife, Claire. Their partnership was full of warmth, fun and devotion, and it was clear how deeply they cared for one another.
Mus also understood the importance of local community life beyond the council chamber. As a proud season ticket holder at Merstham FC, he recognised the value of our local football clubs and the contribution they make to the places they serve.
Mus will be greatly missed by residents, colleagues, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We extend our deepest condolences to Claire and to his family at this very difficult time.
